about

The premier rendez-vous between Nils Ostendorf (trumpet), Philip Zoubek (prepared piano), and Philippe Lauzier (alto saxophone, bass clarinet) led to experimentations with the simple physicality of their instruments; the result being extreme mechanical generators of sounds and tones. Thanks to their advanced and extended techniques and a fine sense of resonance and overtone, the three bring an organic and fused sound into being that wanders through landscapes of density and dynamic; vibrant polyphonic textures leading to valleys of silence, space and serenity. A microscopically recorded album of impassioned music that no one should miss.

"Another elegant outing on Berlin’s schraum imprint [...] skilfully juxtaposing lugubrious subterranean gurgles with bright, chattery (but never aggressive) exchanges."
— The Wire (UK)

"Abstraite, cette musique peut accepter de chanter. Remplie de brisures, elle peut passer pour zen ou se laisser porter par les vents tel un mobile métallique."
— Le son du grisli (France)

"In every way, the trio's fearless and explorative music-making is quintessential Schraum."
— Textura (Canada)

"There is a lot going under the surface of Subsurface, to my enjoyment. A captivating listen. Recommended."
— Monsieur Délire (Canada)
